If you have a busy family, chances are you haven’t clean your cupboards anytime recently either. Having messy cupboards results in food waste and makes it difficult for people to find what they’re looking for. Around here, I try to clean out the cupboards 3-4 times per year, but it usually doesn’t happen that often.
The first thing to go should be opened packages of food that have obviously been there awhile. If you have a compost, all of this food can go into the compost pile.
Next, look at the expiration dates on your food. Food that is expired should be tossed, and food that is getting close needs to be put to the front of the cupboard, or donated to the food pantry if you don’t think you will use it up in time.
A recently cleaned cupboard always looks so bare to me. It’s amazing how fast food can accumulate and then go bad inside a cupboard, which is why I try to clean my out frequently. It’s very upsetting to throw away good food simply because it couldn’t be seen in a messy cupboard.
Once your cupboards are clean, try to avoid filling them up just because they look empty. That only starts the cycle over again. Try to buy small amounts of snacks and dried foods and use them up before purchasing new. This will help you save money by not wasting food, and makes browsing for a snack more enjoyable.
